Keep it Fresh-Rebrand! #WLC

Do you notice how products that have been around forever, everything from mouthwash to cleaning products, continue to advertise as if their brand is better than ever?

Advertisers work hard to keep their products in the top of your mind, hoping when you shop you’ll remember their new and improved formula. They don’t want you to think Listerine is an old, stale mouthwash. When you think of Listerine, they want you to see sexy, clean and desirable. They constantly rebrand their marketing approach so you will keep returning for more.

Those "Other" Projects #WLC

Many writers refer to writing a book as giving birth to their “baby.” If this is true, are conceptual projects “fooling around?”

I joke of course, but are there writers out there besides me who think about the ‘other’ ideas they have jotted down, or even outlined while working on the current one? For me they are like whispers, unborn children beckoning for attention. There is only so much attention to go around, but I sometimes suffer from the guilt of neglect.

Dispatch from the Crossroads #WLC

Even though it’s spring, I am in self-imposed hibernation. As a writer, the last few months have been up and down—typical, I know, but this time was different…a cosmic shift if you will.

Something told me to STOP THE PRESSES, literally. Since embarking on the publishing journey, not writing but publishing, life has been flurries of stress and panic. Yes, that was me operating the control panel so no excuses. Yet lately, more and more, unsure of what buttons to push next I pushed them all to see what would happen. Not a good idea.

Coffee with Zoe #WLC

It always amazes me when the universe delivers people into your life when you need them most.

Last week I had the privilege of meeting and sitting for a two-hour chat over coffee with Zoe Ghahremani, award-winning author of SKY OF RED POPPIES. Before proceeding, let me share the serendipitous path that led us to cross paths.

Totally Committed to Thrones #WLC

While many of you read Fifty Shades of Grey, which for many reasons we won’t discuss here it looks doubtful I will read and unrelated to prudeness, I finally broke down and committed to the Game of Thrones never-ending series. With little time to read these days due to the new writing career, I won’t be done anytime soon—I’m thinking the next five years for sure.

The Myth of Writers Block #WLC

Lev Raphael, Huff Post Blogger had a great post this week about writers block. I posted a lengthy comment, however I still can’t figure out how/when/if they post blog comments because I never saw mine post. Even when there were no comments pending, it never popped up, and it was darn good. So, in retaliation, I’m going to post my own—nanner nanner Huffington P!

New to Twitter or Need Tweet Perspective? Don’t Over-Think It - #WLC

Every so often I need to remind myself was Twitter is, and what it isn’t. I joined Twitter about a year ago, and oh how we have grown together! We now understand our relationship and expectations, which has eased the initial tension between us. Because I tend to be very analytical about most things, including social media platforms, it didn’t take long to research and learn from experience how Twitter should be used, and what it will never accomplish. I also read advice from social media experts about navigating Twitterville. Here are a few tips and truths I have learned:

Thinking About Literary Heroes #WLC

If given a choice of interview questions when featured on a site or blog, I always skip the one about literary influences and heroes. The reason is I just can’t answer it. There is no way to select one, and so it would require writing a small thesis.

What Visiting Hogwarts Showed Me #WLC

My daughter, our friend and I just returned from visiting Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the town of Hogsmeade. It was quite a journey. Okay, we went to Universal Studios in Orlando where they replicated Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, and we forgot it was the middle of spring break. That part was not well thought out. This was a single-minded trip—three Potter nerd girls travelling two days for a one day visit to the park. We book the trip last fall, so the cost was minimal and budget frugal—except for our friend who dropped about $600 on souvenirs.

WLC Authors – Choosing PR Opportunities

Melissa allows me to write this blog within very loose parameters, so occasionally I use the forum in a shameless manner to vent. Many of you may be way ahead of me on this topic, but I need to talk through my first radio interview experience last week. It was not a good one.
