INDIE BOOKS (self-pubbed & small press):
Approximately how many do you read per month?
Just reading my first one ever.
Do you see a need for stronger editing?
Can't judge on the basis of one, but there's _always_ room for stronger editing.
Will you pay a higher price than $.99 for books that are edited well?
Yes.
If you answered YES, would you pay an equivalent price to traditionally published prices?
Depends. I'm willing to pay for a good book, regardless of whether it's an indie or t/p book.

TRADITIONALLY PUBLISHED BOOKS:
Approximately how many do you read per month?
Approximately 4.
Do you see a need for stronger editing?
Yes - but I'm not convinced most editors have e.g. a sufficient knowledge of grammar to do a better job...
Do you feel prices are set too high?
Here in Australia, definitely. In the US and UK, not so much.

Selection bias. You might want to look that up before you place a lot of faith in the information you gather here. But anyway... I don't really notice whether a book is traditionally published or indie published. I read ebooks almost exclusively. My method for choosing what to read is roughly: Look at the cover. If it doesn't look as though it was slapped together in MS Paint, read the blurb. If there are no typos or grammatical errors and it sounds like something I might like, check the price. If it's not obscenely high (see below), download the free sample. Every couple of weeks, I go through the samples I've accumulated. If I get to the end of a sample without wanting to throw my Kindle across the room, I will usually buy the book. By the time I actually get around to reading it, several months might have passed, by which time I will have forgotten who published it, assuming I noticed in the first place. I don't know how many books I read per month - I just get a vague sense every now and then that it's been too long since I last read one. I'll guess two or three, averaged over a year. INDIE BOOKS (self-pubbed & small press): Approximately how many do you read per month? See above. Do you see a need for stronger editing? In some cases, yes. If I can tell from the sample that the author should have used an editor, I don't buy the book. I've read a couple of indie books that have started well and then lost their way in the middle (past the end of the free sample, in other words). This is a common problem with an author's first few books, which would usually be rejected by a traditional publisher (or at least, whipped into shape by an editor). Will you pay a higher price than $.99 for books that are edited well? I'm not that sensitive to price, as long as it's below what I consider reasonable. This is about £3 ($5) for an author I've not read before, and £5 ($7.50) for someone I'm familiar with. The going rate for a paperback where I live is about £8 ($12.75). If you answered YES, would you pay an equivalent price to traditionally published prices? Absolutely not, because indies don't have the same overheads as traditional publishers, and there aren't as many middlemen in the supply chain. TRADITIONALLY PUBLISHED BOOKS: Approximately how many do you read per month? See above. Do you see a need for stronger editing? Dear God, yes. But not the same type of editing that indies often need. I won't name names, but I can think of several books that would have been greatly improved by being hacked down to half or two-thirds of their length, and several series that went on at least one or two books longer than they should have done. It's partly our fault as readers for continuing to buy them, of course... Do you feel prices are set too high? For new releases and bestsellers, yes. But I'm long past the age when I wanted to read what everyone else was reading. If the price is above my limit, I just find something else to buy. It's not as if there's a desperate shortage of excellent books that I haven't read yet... Steven J Pemberton / http://www.pembers.net

I'm willing to pay those prices now.  Traditionally published books are very poorly edited, in content editing and particulary in proofreading.

TRADITIONALLY PUBLISHED BOOKS:

Approximately how many do you read per month? 15-20

Do you see a need for stronger editing?
Yes, in content editing, proofing, and electronic formatting. The quantity over quality method that seems to permeate the traditional publishing industry (which focuses on short term rather than long term gains) has decimated the editing resource capacity.

Do you feel prices are set too high?
In some cases, yes.  However, I did end up on the side of the publishers when it came to the price point between hard copies and electronic copies with a couple of caveats - those having to do with the print-cost savings and royalty distributions.

INDIE BOOKS (self-pubbed & small press):
Approximately how many do you read per month?me=1 to 3, my kids=at least 2 each
Do you see a need for stronger editing?Yes. Some of the indie books are professional quality, but others range from a few too many errors to draft quality.
Will you pay a higher price than $.99 for books that are edited well?Yes and no. Only if the author has already become a favourite. We sample a lot of books and the $.99 price allows us to take more risks on books and discover more authors. The greatest appeal indies have for us right now is affordability. But even the $2.99 or $3.99 ebooks are much cheaper than trad - it's well worth it for an indie author we already like.
If you answered YES, would you pay an equivalent price to traditionally published prices? No - not for an ebook. Yes for a paperback (because we've already discovered the author and are less likely to be disappointed).

TRADITIONALLY PUBLISHED BOOKS:
Approximately how many do you read per month?me=1 or less, my kids=1 or 2 each
Do you see a need for stronger editing? No. There are errors sometimes, but a few are okay.
Do you feel prices are set too high?Yes - definitely for ebooks. Paperbacks are expensive because they cost more to produce so it's hard to say. Paying $15-$20 for a new release paper book that only *might* be good is too much to risk when you're on a tight budget - because just having a traditional publisher behind it doesn't guarantee that it's good or that you'll like it.

Do you see a need for stronger editing? Unfortunately, yes. Too many times I've read books that haven't been proofread or contain scenes that would benefit from tweaking or even being omitted.
Will you pay a higher price than $.99 for books that are edited well? I always pay more than $.99...I don't trust books that are that cheap...
If you answered YES, would you pay an equivalent price to traditionally published prices? Depends. I have nothing against paying up to $10 for an e-book. Once the price is higher, I question whether it's worth it.

INDIE BOOKS (self-pubbed & small press):
Approximately how many do you read per month? 2-3
Do you see a need for stronger editing? Sadly, yes. There are some beautifully edited indie books out there, but they get overshadowed by the ones that don't appear to be edited at all. I don't expect perfection in editing (none of us can achieve that) and I can look past a few editing glitches for the sake of story, but no story is good enough to overcome horrible editing.
Will you pay a higher price than $.99 for books that are edited well? Yes. To be honest, I expect a price to reflect the quality of the product and I'm often concerned that regularly-priced 99 cent books may not reflect high quality. (sale prices are different)
If you answered YES, would you pay an equivalent price to traditionally published prices? Yes.

TRADITIONALLY PUBLISHED BOOKS:
Approximately how many do you read per month? 4-5
Do you see a need for stronger editing? Not as often. However, I have even less tolerance for a poorly edited traditionally published book because there really is no excuse.
Do you feel prices are set too high? Overall, yes, especially in the eBook market. You can't charge the same amount for a paperback and an eBook and not expect the customer to scratch their head. It costs more money to produce a hard copy of a book than an electronic copy, and customers know that.

I feel that indies need to be written well, as do some traditionally published books.  Editing should strengthen and make the books as equal as possible in content and presentations--and I feel writers, traditional or indie--should be paid for their work equitably.

Do you see a need for stronger editing? yes! I know it's not been edited when it's full of Introductory Present Participial Phrases and misplaced modifiers. The book becomes humorous. POV shifts are another source of either minor annoyance or jaw shattering head shaking. Oh, and purple prose. I'm really good at that! And I actually enjoy writing that grabs Jesus handles, LOL
Will you pay a higher price than $.99 for books that are edited well? up to $2.99, but it's not the editing that's the deal breaker. The story has to be fresh and different. that's what I enjoy about self-pubbed stories. Small press, not really. They are trying too hard to fit into genre expectations. Break a rule or two, that's the joy of indie-pubbing.
If you answered YES, would you pay an equivalent price to traditionally published prices? No, because I think traditionally published books are too expensive

I like the self-pubbed books for mish-mashing genre's and delivering stories that break rules, e.g. protag dies? a pastor is implicated in kidnapping? a woman falls in love with two different men in a romance?

I read an average of eight books a week. I used to read only best sellers until I got an e-reader and discovered so many fresh new authors. I personally have never read a book that didn't have some mistakes in it. Over the summer I read ATLAS SHRUGGED and found two mistakes in it. It was written in 1957. Did I get hung up on those mistakes. Uh, no!

If I had a choice between reading a good book with a few mistakes and reading a sterile book with no plot and no mistakes, which would I choose? Uh, let me think, I would read the good book with the good plot. I think you can edit the pure flavor out of a book.

Would I pay more for a book that is well edited? Definitely not. I love the human factor and I know I'm in the minority. Some of us can't afford to get editors when we're just starting out. Are we to be punished?

I hate snobery in all forms and we are only human. If you're wanting a literary work of art just don't buy my books. My books were fun to write and I hope fun to read. I hope I never get so greedy that I feel I have to charge more than 99 cents for my books. To me it is more rewarding for someone to say, "I read your book and really enjoyed it. Five hours of entertainment for 99cents, WOW!"

I read a couple of books per month, maybe more depending on how much time I have. I do see a need for stronger editing, but just as often I'm seeing indies breaking new ground with fresh styles that don't fit what is considered the norm. Let's not forget Steinbeck and Sallinger and what the critics said about them. Just my take on it. As far as price goes, there are good arguments on both sides. I think its up to each individual.
